Spotlight: Bob Morley

Sorry for the long delay. I don’t even have a good excuse, I’ve had this post in mind for quite awhile.

Spotlights are simultaneously the easiest and hardest posts to write. I can talk about actors and shows and characters all day, but those are not the point of this blog. I could go on and on about how quickly I got sucked into the world of The 100 or how Bellamy Blake has quickly become one of my favorite characters in anything, or how it is completely endearing that Bob Morley appears to be a bit of a nerd.

As for style, Bob Morley’s is pretty much as simple as it comes. A combination of t-shirts, over-shirts or jackets, over-sized sweaters, and baseball caps. Like a weirdly large selection of baseball hats. (My favorite is the Blake one seen here)

bob morley

Half the time his sweaters are a size too big, and his hair is always unpredictable, but at least a little bit a mess. But a selection of well-fitting white, black, and grey t-shirts go well under any type of sweater or jacket.

At Cons and fan appearances he wears t-shirts and hats that reference other pop culture (as you know, I’m not always a fan of these types of things, but Cons are definitely a place to wear them, and I am always a fan of unapologetic enthusiasm.) I also may have witnessed a picture of him wearing a shirt that quotes Shania Twain, which, is just pure gold.

His glasses (which wow, his face didn’t need anymore help, but okay) are strong frames, but don’t overpower his face. Oval shaped faces can get away with most glasses styles, and angular jawlines (and/or heart shaped faces) also do well with squared frames. The matte black keeps them from being too flashy, but just funky enough.

bob morley1

The 100 is Bob Morley’s first real entrance into American TV. (Like all Australian actors, he did a stint on Neighbours. No really, any Australian actor you can name has been on Neighbours at some point.) And he has totally embraced who he is. He is actually quite open about how this was/is a struggle for him as a biracial kid growing up in a small town.

Find your uniform that helps you be you. Whether that is a white t-shirt or a freshly-pressed button-up, there is no reason you can look great while embracing yourself and your style.

While you do that, I’ll be off waiting for season 4 of The 100.

The Best Bad Boy Around

I have to admit, I’ve been meaning to write for some time, but I’ve been lacking inspiration. I really should have just looked in front of my face. With the new revival coming up and a coworker beginning her first viewing of the series, both of which spurred my own rewatch, I have had Gilmore Girls on the brain lately.

Now I know Gilmore Girls may not be terribly familiar to this audience, but here’s what you need to know for now. Jess is the Best.

tumblr_mwixswbdMC1spt49uo4_500

Jess, played by Milo Ventimiglia, is the quintessential intellectual bad boy; he’s got a troubled past, doesn’t like small talk, and is more likely to sass than not, but he also gets his life together in a big way. He’s the best bad boy around.

While Jess is immediately recognizable as the resident rebel with his James Dean glare, black leather jacket, and carefully coifed hair…the rest of his wardrobe is pretty…normal.

BestBadBoy1

There’s a lot of dark colors, ribbed sweaters, and so, so many layers. But even a yellow/gold coat can work for a bad boy with the right amount of snark and disregard. But he plays up his assets. The neutral colors don’t pull focus away from his face. Pushed up sleeves, tight-ish sweaters, and bulky watches draw attention to his arms.

His hair changes length through out the series, but always remains artfully disheveled. When it’s short, he uses product. When it’s long, he keeps it out of his face.

And while his jeans might be a little loose by modern trends, and some of his shirts scream mid-2000s, a lot of it is quality basics.

BestBadBoy2

Mimic Jess with hoodies under leather jackets, or maybe even different types of sweaters. Trade the classic mid-2000s look of a long-sleeved shirt under a short-sleeved shirt for a black or white v-neck.

Jess Mariano’s wardrobe matured as he did, and I can’t wait to see where his life and wardrobe have gone in the past eight years.

#JessistheBest #TeamJess

To nail the literary part of this intellectual bad boy’s look, keep an eye out for a literary gents post that I am desperately trying to complete.

As always, please send requests for things you’d like to see!

Spotlight: Liam Hemsworth

Part II of the Hunger Games spotlights and I’m already questioning the order because now there are all these new photos of Josh Hutcherson with a great new haircut…but alas we must press on.

Liam Hemsworth plays the other leading man in the series, Gale Hawthorne. And I can’t talk about Gale without quoting my brother as we left the first movie with his very pregnant wife, who had made him read the books: “I never really understood why people liked Gale, but he’s sooo handsome.”

It’s true, Hemsworth family looks are well regarded, and while Liam’s filmography may not be as far reaching as his brother Chris’s, but he is steadily working his way up, particularly building on his action star status.

Liam Hemsworth A well-fitted suit can make anyone look polished, but Liam has figured out how to use his grooming to tailor his look further. Moving from clean-shaven with carefully coiffed hair, to scruff and slightly messy hair, to a full beard and longer hair, all work, but they clearly give different tones to his appearance. The scruff is the classic Hollywood heartthrob look, and the beard gives him a more mature look.

Also, notice the colors. The light blue shirt matches his eyes perfectly, making them stand out. The burgundy suit works in the opposite way to achieve the same effect. The charcoal grey suits aren’t as harsh as black would be and make his skin appear tanner.

Liam

Liam is a really good example of a classic wardrobe. It’s very rarely too risky and it is almost always flattering. He’s one of the best examples of achievable style, ranging from ultra-casual to formal. Keep an eye out for even more Liam Hemsworth in your future because his notoriety is just growing.

And just for funsies, here he is with the Muppets because it doesn’t get much better than that.

Spotlight: Josh Hutcherson

Now I promised to do a spotlight on Josh Hutcherson clear back on my post about his character Clapton Davis in 2012….so I guess this has been awhile in the making. But I am excited to announce that, in honor of the release of Mockingjay – Part 2 next month, I am going to do a series of spotlights on some of the Hunger Games’ leading men…beginning with the man himself, Josh Hutcherson.

If you don’t think that Hutcherson’s character Peeta is incredible, just you wait. I am so excited to see how Hutcherson portrays his journey in the last film because if anyone could do that justice, it’s Josh Hutcherson.

Josh Hutcherson

Josh Hutcherson’s first acting credits are from 2002, he would have been 10 years old, and has been featured in approximately three works a year since. There is no doubt that he is a hard worker and has escaped the “child star” curse. So while he has been working steadily for the past 13 years, Hutcherson didn’t really become a household name until Hunger Games hit theaters.

Despite all of the red carpets and award shows, Hutcherson’s wardrobe is fairly casual. He sticks to t-shirts and layers button-ups or jackets over them. This no-fail look allows him to get a lot of mileage out of some basic white and black tees. Thin sweaters and henleys are other simple, but essentially no-fail, casual looks.

The Josh Hutcherson Staple

Hutcherson keeps his hair shorter on the sides, as is in fashion, but not in such an extreme way that it dominates his appearance. This look works well when you want the ability to range from carefully coiffed to elegantly disheveled. If you’ve only seen Josh in his Hunger Games role, then you might be surprised that he is a natural brunette. While the blond is fine on Peeta, his natural dark brown works better. Natural hair colors tend to compliment your natural skin tones.

As for facial hair, he rarely has any. Yes, he is relatively young, but he also has a crazy powerful jaw (Saturday Night Live knows). Facial hair is great for defining your jaw, but if that is already one of your most prominent features, you probably don’t need to rely on it.

Although the Hunger Games series is coming to a close, I am looking forward to seeing what Josh Hutcherson is up to next. He’s played the range from Oscar nominated drama The Kids Are All Right, to the vastly underrated animated film Epic, to of course, my favorite trippy indie horror comedy Detention. Don’t miss your last chance to see him as Peeta Mellark in Mockingjay part 2, opening in November.

Spotlight: John and Hank Green

Hank and John Green

This one goes out to all the Nerdfighters.

For those of you who don’t know, John and Hank Green are brothers who, well, they do a lot. You’ve probably heard of John Green, or at least one of his books or the movies that have been based on his books, but John and Hank have also founded, produce(d), and host(ed) a large number of YouTube series.

This may not feel like a notable thing, but it really, really is. My personal favorite is VlogBrothers, their original channel, where they address whatever topics they want. But the best part about it is how they handle these topics – with thoughtful, objective, and open-minded consideration, and often humor.

Their unique outlooks and fields of choice are different, but complementary, so are their styles.

Hank Green keeps his look simple: graphic tees with messages or groups he cares about, plain button-ups and sweaters, and square, thick-rimmed glasses.

Nerdfighter Hank Green

He recently got a new haircut (you can see John have an existential crisis about it here). And although he previously had a pretty timeless haircut, the new one is a little trendier and it makes him look a little more polished.

Also I have a fondness for the blazer over graphic tee look, maybe just because it reminds me of House, but also it is a nice combination of adulthood and playfuness, which suits Hank.

John Green also keeps his looks fairly simple. He seems to favor collared shirts, often in the forms of polos and button-ups with blazers.

He’s also well known for his puff aka his hair, which can become very fluffy. But hey, who doesn’t want that kind of natural volume.

Nerdfighter John Green

This photo set also features Nat Wolff and the Yeti (John’s wife Sarah)! You should probably dress like Nat Wolff too. He’ll have his own post eventually.

John recently got new glasses. He had pretty traditional, simple frames, and just moved to an trendier, thicker-rimmed pair. Similarly to Hank’s haircut, John’s glasses just give him a more current look. Another trendy move of his is extra cool socks, usually from Happy Socks, which he has endorsed and we have talked about here.

You can also get your own DFTBA Records wardrobe, if you want to go full Nerdfighter!

Hank and John, more than just being good representatives of accomplishable style, are just good people. They regularly work to raise money and awareness for charities, encourage education, positivity, inclusivity, and thoughtfulness, and generally ‘decrease world suck.’ Whether you like their books and music, and whether you agree with all their ideas, or not, they are generally great examples of what a good man can be.

After watching VlogBrothers videos I almost always feel better about myself and like I should and want to do more. That is a magical combination, that is not easy to come by.

So, WAMSW readers, Don’t Forget to be Awesome.

Spotlight: Brandon Flowers

The thing about Brandon Flowers is…he can do whatever he wants.

He may not be at the top of the Billboard charts every week, but pretty much everyone under a certain age can tell you their favorite Killer’s song (When You Were Young) or has been asked at some point if they are Human or Dancer.

He’s putting out his second solo album this year, but no one is worried because The Killers will never die. And we’ll take Flowers’ genius however we can get it.

If you’re thinking I’m crazy because you’ve never heard of this guy and/or questioning whether these songs really are genius, consider this excerpt from his Wikipedia bio: “Rufus Wainwright wrote a song about Flowers called “Tulsa” for his fifth album Release the Stars[12]Sir Elton John has listed Flowers as one of his top-five heroes while editing The Independents World Aids Day special edition.[13][14] U2‘s Bono described Flowers’ voice to The Globe and Mail saying, “We need him on the radio…His voice!”[15]

But now on to his clothes, where Flowers is nothing less than a chameleon. He’s The Heartbreaker, The Hipster, The Guy Next Door, and The Performer.

The Heartbreaker

In this case The Heartbreaker is the brooding, sensitive songwriter who is too emotionally distant to be fully present. Now, in reality, Brandon Flowers is a family man, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t look the part of The Heartbreaker. Dark and neutral basics make up the look, with a few distinct touches that show just how much better he is than everyone else.

Brandon Flowers - The Heartbreaker

The Hipster

We’ve already established that Brandon Flowers is cooler than you, or anyone else, so the hipster look comes pretty naturally. Flowers is a humble guy, but the suspenders, high-water pants, endless layers, and perfect scruff are all the hallmarks of a perfect hipster. This is arguably Flowers’ go to look.

Brandon Flowers - The Hipster

The Guy Next Door

Brandon Flowers makes no bones about the fact that this is what he is. He is a husband and a father, who happens to have a job he loves. He isn’t always dressed to perform for 90,000 people in Wembley Stadium. Sometimes everyone need to throw on a button-up and a jacket. Clearly some of his style crosses over, making the looks a little more exciting, but they are still pretty basic.

Brandon Flowers - The Guy Next Door

The Performer

Now, this is the Brandon Flowers that we probably first recognize. This is Brandon Flowers in eyeliner and feathers. And oh how he pulls it off. The Performer is brash and flamboyant, he is a god among men, and he can do no wrong. This is not an everyday look. This is for stadiums and music videos, but that doesn’t mean that us normal folk can’t appreciate it.

Blast from the Past

The Inspiration

“I look just like Buddy Holly, Oh-oh and you’re Mary Tyler Moore” -Weezer

buddyholly

Buddy Holly was a musician and songwriter who pioneered a lot of many of the hallmarks of modern rock and pop music. Although Holly died in 1959 at only 22, he remains immortalized in numerous songs, movies, musicals, and books about his music and influence. Critic Bruce Eder described him as “the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll.”

The Modern Translation

Modern Buddy Holly

Style-wise Buddy Holly is the perfect embodiment of the late-50s good-guy rocker. He’s clean cut, well-kept, and charmingly genuine looking.

Tailored suits with floppy bow ties, shawl-neck cardigans, button-ups and ties, and knitwear tees are classic callbacks, that have a new life in modern fashion. Thick-rimmed glasses paired with any of these looks are the real kicker.

John Mayer is known as almost anything but a “good-guy” rocker, but his outfit at the (otherwise dull) 2015 Grammy Awards invoked classic Holly. The blue jacket, glasses, well-coiffed hair, and pink guitar were down right swoon-worthy. Especially the pink guitar.

While John Mayer may have nailed the look this time, check out consistently Holly-esque looks on New Zealand musician Willy Moon.

The Inspiration

“‘Cause you got that James Dean daydream look in your eyes.” -Taylor Swift

James Dean

James Dean was an actor that turned into a bonafide icon. He is the poster child for teenage angst and rebelling without a cause. Like Holly, Dean died young in a tragic crash. He was only 24 in 1955 and, again like Holly, has been immortalized in film, biographies, and as the bad boy of everyone’s dreams.

The Modern Translation

Modern James Dean

James Dean is angst and apathy embodied. He’s a little bit dangerous, does what he wants, and is somehow above judgement and vain.

Moto-style black leather jackets, tight white t-shirts, slim black jeans, and sunglasses make up the modern James Dean look. Largely monochrome, or at least neutral, this guy would blend in if he didn’t exude so much cool. While James Dean’s hair was usually pretty done, as per the era, the modern version can either be a slick pompodour or disheveled and a little longer.

Jamie Campbell-Bower owns the pretty, bad boy that couldn’t care if his shirt has holes in it or not, but if you are looking for the whole James-Dean-reincarnated experience, check out Milo Ventimiglia as Jess Mariano in Gilmore Girls. He’s got the outfits, hair, and angst in droves.

Spotlight: Dylan O’Brien

Mr. Dylan O'Brien

Whether you are anxiously awaiting season 5 of Teen Wolf or you’re hoping to find The Maze Runner under your Christmas tree, anyone who’s seen Dylan O’Brien knows that he is a rising star. If you just need proof check him out as *spoiler alert* Nogitsune-possessed Sitles on season 3B of Teen Wolf.

As confusing as Teen Wolf’s mythology can be at times, Dylan’s wardrobe is a study in simplicity. He is the perfect example of using basic pieces to create a complete and totally functional wardrobe. Dylan O'Brien

When it comes to casual clothes he sticks to t-shirts, baseball shirts, and casual button-ups. They are mostly neutral in color, but with various patterns. Plain black t-shirts look surprisingly sophisticated, especially when paired with dark, slim pants.

A similar theory is also applied whenever he wears sunglasses or glasses. They are solid, classic shapes. Black frames are distinctive and striking. In glasses, they play-up his geek-chic appeal; in sunglasses, they are old Hollywood cool. Dylan O'Brien Classic

Even his more dressed up looks are simple. A white shirt, dark slacks, with no tie is a classic and almost never the wrong choice. Same with a simple black leather jacket. Classics are classics for a reason.

Also, if nothing else, Dylan O’Brien proves that hair you could run your hands through is better than a buzzcut. If you’ve got the hair, flaunt it.

Dylan O'Brien Hair

Don’t believe this kid has power? Just remember that he was the 6th most reblogged actor on Tumblr in 2013, and that was before he starred in his own blockbuster.

Spotlight: Jamie Dornan

When trying to decide on this month’s Spotlight, I flipped through my archives and saw quite a few of Mr. Jamie Dornan. The Irish actor and model is no stranger to well layered, quality clothes, so he is a perfect Spotlight.  And honestly I had to do it before 50 Shades of Grey came out, because, well, yeah.

Jamie Dornan will always be Graham/the Huntsman and Count Axel Fersen to me (and an unnervingly attractive serial killer to my sister-in-law). And while his attractiveness may be amplified by his delightful accent, this is a still photo appreciation of his style, so it isn’t quite as biased.

Let’s start with luxurious layers:

Jamie Dornan

There are a lot of great ways to layer clothes and they all amplify an outfit. Even if it is throwing a jacket or a sweater over a t-shirt, you already look more put together. Layers also allow you to mix patterns and colors to keep it visually interesting.

Recently my dad bought a button-down shirt that he decided was far to bright for him to wear, so he threw a sweater over it, and it was instantly toned down, but still retained some of the excitement.

That said, Jamie tends to stick to neutrals and primary colors.

Jamie Dornan - Irish Actor/Model

Mr. Dornan has also mastered the art of facial hair. Whether he is clean shaven or scruffy, it is always in an effort to emphasize his cheekbones. His beard is never too long or unkempt, and it tends to also hit just below his cheekbones, which is exactly where you want it.

As much as I don’t understand some of Jamie Dornan’s more recent  role selections, he clearly has a bright future in front of him in both film and fashion. His looks are classic and sexy and definitely ones to replicate.

Spotlight: Kit Harington

Kit Harington

Game of Thrones favorite, Kit Harington is still fairly new to the professional acting scene, but you’d never know it with how prolific he has become. Famous for his character’s terrible luck and luscious dark curls, Kit Harington only seems to retain one of those qualities in his real life.

In the style world, Kit is the perfect example of using basic staples to create a complete wardrobe. He tends to wear dark neutrals, which means they can be combined in a ton of different ways. Building a wardrobe with basics and neutrals allows the greatest number of unique outfits with the least amount of individual pieces. Even his glasses are dark and classic.

kit harington

The basics that Kit embraces the most are: leather jackets, peacoats, henleys, button ups in solid and plaid, and well-fitting t-shirts. WAMSW has talked about all of these individually, and they are great together or separately.

He also finds ways to dress up jeans, by choosing dark colors and pairing them with nice shirts. Dark wash, grey, or black jeans appear more like trousers, so they look more sophisticated.

kit harington

Kit’s hair is an interesting length, and could potentially be very awkward. He avoids this with his natural curly texture and by keeping it well kept up. His hair is shiny, not frizzy, and looks more disheveled than out of control (hint: this is the sweet zone).

While rumor has it that Jon Snow knows nothing, it is clear Kit Harington has caught on to how to have a simple, but classic wardrobe that works in almost any setting.
